My guest for this episode is Dr. Victoria Boyd. Dr. Boyd is President and Founder of The Philantrepreneur™ Foundation and has been a driving force in education and non-profit arenas as an author, trainer, administrator and advocate throughout the country.
Dr. Boyd recognized early that her passion was educating others and had an extensive career teaching dance for 28 years experiencing extraordinary opportunities and taking her students throughout the US and around the globe. As an educator she has received numerous awards and has been recognized in Who’s Who in America’s Teachers. An award that she is most proud of and honored to receive was the ‘Fulbright Memorial Teacher Award’ where she was given an opportunity to study the educational system in Japan for an extended period.
Her career shifted when she accepted the position of Arts/Education Consultant for Wayne RESA, serving 36 school districts and 68 charter schools. In this position she had a pivotal role as the state liaison developing professional training, education television executive producer, writer of teacher certification standards, and implemented statewide educational initiatives. For this work she was honored with Wayne State University’s Arts Achievement Award and ArtServe Michigan’s Advocate of the Year.
Concurrent to her education duties, Dr. Boyd was highly active in numerous nonprofit organizations and served in leadership capacities such as founder, president, board member, and interim executive director on the state and national levels. This also was the catalyst that inspired her to earn a doctorate degree in organizational management and development.
After moving to the Las Vegas valley nonprofits became her primary focus. She served as an instructor in UNLV’s Nonprofit Management Certification program for nine years. She became an independent consultant and launched The Philantrepreneur™ Foundation (TPF), a nonprofit FOR nonprofits with a mission to build capacity through education, awareness and resources. Under TPF’s umbrella she has developed and presents regular training based on the critical needs of the sector. And, Dr. Boyd opened TPF Training Center, which is the only Nevada facility dedicated to nonprofit training.
Dr. Boyd has authored three books and been a contributor to several others. The books include, ‘The Wealthy Teacher: Answering the Question ‘What’s next?’; and Board Bound Leadership: The Four Essentials. Since being in Nevada she continues to be recognized with numerous honors such as 2015 LVBMN Entrepreneur Achievement Award, and the 2016 MyVegas Magazine recognition as a Top 100 Most Influential Women.
Dr. Boyd and I discuss why continuing education is so important for nonprofit leaders and how it directly relates to the sustainability of their nonprofit organizations.
